Alex Katz wurde am 24. Juli 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, geboren. Er studierte Kunst an der Cooper Union in New York und an der Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Nach seinem Abschluss an der Cooper Union 1951 begann er seine Karriere als Maler, obwohl er zunächst als Grafiker und Illustrator arbeitete. Seine frühen Arbeiten waren abstrakte Expressionisten. Seine ersten beiden Ausstellungen fanden 1957 und 1959 in der Künstlergruppe "The Ten" statt. Seine erste Einzelausstellung wurde 1959 im Tanager Gallery in New York gezeigt. Anfang der 1960er Jahre begann Katz, Bilder zu malen, die menschliche Figuren zeigten. Mit diesen Bildern wurde er weltweit bekannt.
