Information about David Hockney


David Hockney ist einer der bekanntesten englischen Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts und einer der einflussreichsten Künstler der Pop Art. Er wurde am 9. Juli 1937 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Großbritannien, geboren. Er lebte mit seinen Eltern, Kenneth und Laura Hockney, und seinem jüngeren Bruder John zusammen. Hockney begann seine künstlerische Ausbildung 1953 am Bradford College of Art, wo er auf Anhieb begeisterte Reaktionen auf seine Arbeiten erhielt. 1957 ging er an der Royal College of Art in London auf, wo er unter anderem von Professoren wie William Coldstream und Lawrence Gowing unterrichtet wurde. Während seines Studiums entwickelte er einen unverwechselbaren Stil, der sehr von den Werkzeugen des Fotografen beeinflusst war. Er stellte seine Arbeiten in der Londoner Whitechapel Art Gallery aus und erlangte 1958 den Prix de Rome. 1961 ging er nach Kalifornien, USA, und begann, die Landschaft des amerikanischen Westens zu malen. Seine zunehmenden Interessen an Pop Art und Fotografie, die sich in seinen Werken manifestierten, brachten ihm weltweit Anerkennung. 1964 hatte Hockney seine erste Einzelausstellung im Kasmin Gallery in London. In den folgenden Jahren eröffnete er mehrere Ausstellungen in London, New York und Los Angeles, und seine Werke wurden in Galerien und Museen auf der ganzen Welt ausgestellt. Von den 1970er bis in die 2000er Jahre hat Hockney viele verschiedene Techniken ausprobiert, darunter Collagen, Fotografie, Video und Computeranimation. Er hat auch Porträts von Prominenten wie Henry Geldzahler, Celia Birtwell und Peter Schlesinger gemalt. Sein 2006er Porträt von Queen Elizabeth II. wurde zum National Portrait Gallery in London aufgenommen. Außerdem hat Hockney Bücher und Zeichnungen veröffentlicht, darunter die Bestseller „David Hockney’s Alphabet“ und „A Bigger Picture“. Er hat auch mehrere Filme gemacht, darunter „A Day on the Grand Canal with the Emperor of China“ und „A Day on the Grand Canal with the Emperor of China II“. Hockney wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, darunter der Order of Merit (2012) und der Knighthood (1997). Er lebt derzeit in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
