Duncan Grant war ein britischer Maler, Designer und Mitglied der Bloomsbury-Gruppe. Er wurde am 21. Januar 1885 in Rothiemurchus, Schottland, geboren und wuchs bei seiner Großmutter in Battersea, London, auf. Grant begann als junger Mann mit Zeichenunterricht in London. Er studierte an der Westminster School of Art und an der Slade School of Fine Arts. 1901 und 1902 studierte er in Paris bei Matisse und an der Académie Julian. 1905 wurde er Mitglied der Bloomsbury-Gruppe. In den nächsten Jahren reiste er viel und malte Landschaften sowie Porträts. Seine frühen Werke wurden vom Impressionismus beeinflusst, und er war auch vom Post-Impressionismus, Jugendstil und Kubismus inspiriert. Von 1909 bis 1914 hatte Grant eine enge Beziehung zu Vanessa Bell, mit der er eine Tochter hatte. 1915 heiratete er die Malerin und Designerin Mary Sargant Florence. Grant malte neben seinen Landschaften und Porträts auch Stillleben und interieurs, vor allem in leuchtenden, pastellfarbenen Farben. Er experimentierte mit verschiedenen Techniken, darunter Collage und Fotografie. Er hatte im Laufe seines Lebens viele Ausstellungen. 1915 nahm er an der ersten Ausstellung der Londoner Künstlergruppe 'The Omega Workshops' teil. Er hatte einige Einzelausstellungen in London und in anderen Städten, darunter in Edinburgh, Bristol und Paris. Ab den 1920er Jahren arbeitete er auch als Bühnenbildner. Neben dem Malen und Designen schrieb Grant auch einige Bücher, darunter 'The Painter's Object' (1929), 'A Painter's Garden' (1931) und 'Paintings and Drawings by Duncan Grant' (1935). 1946 wurde Grant zum Ritter geschlagen. Er starb am 21. Mai 1978 im Alter von 93 Jahren. Sein Werk wird heute in vielen Museen auf der ganzen Welt ausgestellt.
