Jean Cocteau wurde am 5. Juli 1889 in Maisons-Laffitte, Frankreich, geboren. Seine Eltern waren Eugénie Lecomte und Eugéne Cocteau. Sein Vater war Rechtsanwalt und seine Mutter war Lehrerin. Cocteau begann früh, sich für Kunst zu interessieren. Er schrieb Gedichte, Geschichten und Theaterstücke und nahm an Kunstausstellungen teil. Im Jahr 1909 reiste er nach Paris, um eine Schauspielausbildung zu beginnen. In der französischen Hauptstadt verbrachte er einige Monate und lernte viele Künstler kennen, unter anderem Jean Marais, einen Schauspieler und Regisseur. 1910 kehrte Cocteau nach Paris zurück, um an einer Schauspielschule zu unterrichten. 1912 schrieb und inszenierte er sein erstes Theaterstück, "Le Potomak", das ein Erfolg wurde. Aufgrund seines Erfolges schrieb und inszenierte er weitere Stücke, darunter "The Breasts of Tiresias" (1917), "The Human Voice" (1930) und "The Infernal Machine" (1934). Cocteau schrieb auch Gedichte und Romane. Sein bekanntestes Werk ist "Les Enfants Terribles" (1929). Weitere Werke sind "The White Book" (1923) und "The Testament of Orpheus" (1960). Cocteau entwickelte sich zu einem vielseitigen Künstler und begann mit der Fotografie und Filmemacherei. Sein erster Film, "The Blood of a Poet", erschien 1930. Weitere bekannte Filme sind "Beauty and the Beast" (1946), "Orpheus" (1949) und "Testament of Orpheus" (1960). Cocteau begann auch mit der Malerei und schuf mehrere Gemälde, darunter "The Hand of Orpheus" (1929) und "The Tower of Orpheus" (1933). Sein Werk wurde in vielen Museen ausgestellt, darunter das Centre Pompidou in Paris und das Museum of Modern Art in New York. Cocteau starb am 11. Oktober 1963 in Milly-la-Forêt, Frankreich. Er hat das französische Kulturleben auf vielfältige Weise bereichert und wird als einer der einflussreichsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts angesehen.
