Thomas Gainsborough (1727 - 1788) war ein englischer Maler und Grafiker des 18. Jahrhunderts, der vor allem für seine Landschaftsgemälde und Porträts bekannt ist. Er wurde am 14. Mai 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England, geboren. Sein Vater war ein Schneider und seine Mutter eine Schneiderin. Als junger Mann studierte Gainsborough Porträts und Landschaftsgemälde in der Kunstsammlung seines Onkels in Ipswich. 1740 zog er nach London, um bei der renommierten Künstlerin Hubert Gravelot zu studieren. Im Jahr 1745 zog er nach Bath, wo er sich als Porträtmaler etablierte. Seine Landschaftsgemälde, die er in dieser Zeit anfertigte, waren für seine Zeit sehr innovativ. Diese Werke wurden von vielen Kritikern geschätzt und machten ihn berühmt. 1759 zog Gainsborough nach London, wo er eine sehr erfolgreiche Porträtmaler-Karriere begann. Er malte viele wichtige Persönlichkeiten des 18. Jahrhunderts, darunter König George III., seine Familie und andere Aristokraten. 1768 wurde er zum Mitglied der Royal Academy of Arts gewählt. Gainsboroughs Landschaftsgemälde wurden zunehmend beliebter, da sie einen realistischeren Stil als die meisten anderen Landschaftsgemälde der Zeit hatten. Er begann auch mit experimentellen Techniken, wie der Kombination von Ölfarben und Aquarellfarben. Gainsborough starb am 2. August 1788 in London. Sein Werk beeinflusste viele nachfolgende Künstler. Er ist ein wichtiger Vertreter der englischen Kunst des 18. Jahrhunderts.
