41 pp. Illustrated. 18x22 cm. (7x8¾") Brown alligator print leather, titled in gilt. Includes 10 original illustrations, 2 hand drawn maps, and 26 post cards. Handwritten, hand painted, hand drawn pictorial travel diary kept by George Maxwell Cornfield as he took an around the world journey that covered 6 months of the year in 1932. This handwritten travel diary includes the author's own water color paintings; pencil drawings; ink and pen drawings, etc. as the Cornfield family crossed the globe. George was 14 years old when he went on this voyage with his family. The family consisted of the father John, an accountant, mother Fanny, George and his brother Archibald Cornfield.They boarded the ship S.S. Choshun Mara, of the D.K.K. line of Kobe, Japan, and sailed out of Shanghai to Tsingtao then to Dairen, Japan. They stayed at the Yamato Hotel in Dairen and George, in pen and ink, painstakingly drew a detailed picture of Dairen Hospital, which is absolutely stunning. He also completed a two page water color map of their journey by rail and steam ship, across Siberia/Russia and Europe. They arrived in London, England, where the family boarded the R.M.S. Majestic , White Star Line, on their voyage to New York, May 25th - 30th, 1932. He did a pen and ink rendering of the Statue Of Liberty, attached several post cards, and a water color two page map of "Our Route Across The U.S." from New York to San Francisco. He included two water color images he did of humorous "novel drink and ice cream stalls we saw along the motor highways." Attached several more post cards as they crossed America to include Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah; San Francisco and Bay; Fleishhacker Swimming Pool in San Francisco, the largest pool in the world; Cliff House; Yosemite Park. An original Yosemite Indian Woman, etc. His last piece of art in pencil before they leave San Francisco is a very impressive drawing of a street in "Chinatown, San Francisco, Calif." Oct. 6th they leave the United States as they board the M.S. Asama Maru in San Francisco and they are bound for Shanghai. George has a beautiful water color rendering, again in great detail of the "swimming pool aboard the Asama Maru." There are several post cards of Hawaii as this is their first stop on the way to China. Post cards depict Bird's Eye View of Honolulu Harbor; Nuuanu Pali; Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Waikiki Beach; Surfing/Surf Board Riding with Diamond Head in the background; etc. More postcards to include Mount Fuji in Japan; aerial view of the City of Kobe (before any WWII bombing or the earthquake in 1995 when huge districts of Kobe were decimated.) George's rendering of a Sampan or a Junk boat being steered by the standing rower as he is apparently taking the businessman depicted in the painting to his destination, was George's final painting in this book. The last couple of pages in this diary album consist of handwritten signatures of numerous people that George met along the way, and a photograph of a lovely young lady who wrote "with love from Rita. Paris, 8 Mai, 1932." (Notably both the Asian ships, S.S. Choshun Mara and the M.S. Asama Maru have World War Two history and both were sunk during WWII. There is more information on these two ships on Wikipedia.) George was born January 6, 1918, in Bombay, India. He died in East Horsley Leatherhead, England May 3, 1974, at the age of 54.
