Map 11 x 16.5 in. Manuscript map, elevations shown by hachures. Upper right: "Map made for Kosciuszko of the buildings and Works at West Point and transmitted by him in his letter to Major Samuel McDougall April 25, 1779. copied from the original Jan. 3, 1866 by Capt. E.C. [Edward Carlisle] Boynton, USA." Plus copy (so marked) of the letter written by Kosciuszko to McDougall. The original of this letter was also transcribed in Guide to West Point, and the U.S. Military Academy. With Maps and Engravings. New York: D. van Nostrand, 1867. Given the date the map and letter were copied, we suspect this was part of the effort to put together the Guide Book. The letter is 8 x 12.5 in. West Point, 25th April, 1779 Sir: I send you a ruff map of West Point, with indication as you desire from me, about the Public Buildings, and the Works. The Carpenters Compliend about the provision, that he have not enof; he beg your honor to allow them more bred. a House full of Ammunition. b The Barracks. c The Carpenter's House. d The Commissary House. e For the Fourage. f The Huts. g The Read House. h Baker's House. i Provision House. k Small Commissary House. l Smock House. m The Barracks. n The Steble, o Of the Artellery Officer's House p Artellery Barracks. q Greaton's Battery. r Chain Battery begun last summer. s Redoubt for fivety men begun last Summer. t Redoubt for fivety men begun last Summer. u Guard House. w Guard House not covered. x Point of (Projected) Block House with Bumprove for fivety men. y Swamps. Your Most Humble Servant (Signed) THAD KOSCIUSZKO Col. [To] The Honorable Major General McDougall, Peekskill." Condition: Moderate to heavy toning. The map has been laid on linen at some point in the past. Edge chipping with some minor losses. Letter is also toned with some losses, especially in lower right corner.
