Letter Rate 1897 (7 Jan.) cover front from the French Consulate in Shanghai to the French Legation in Peking bearing strip of three 4c. on 4ca. tied by Customs/Shanghai c.d.s.; some light soiling. This is the earliest postally used Imperial Post cover. Photo Postally used covers dated before the official opening of the Imperial Post Office are extremely scarce, only about fifteen covers or fronts have been recorded. The official opening of the new Post Office was 2nd February, but the new stamps were available in Shanghai from 2nd January. A similar cover front from the same correspondence is in the Dr Chang Min Sheng collection
