1910 RENAULT 12HP TYPE BZ OPEN-DRIVE THREE-QUARTER LANDAULET Registration No. BRN 78 Chassis No. 24159 Engine No. 987 Maroon and black with black leather interior Engine: four cylinder monobloc, 80 x 120mm bore and stroke, 2,412cc, thermo-syphon cooling, magneto ignition; Gearbox: three speed and reverse, with right-hand change, shaft drive; Suspension: front, semi-elliptic leaf springs, rear three-quarter elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: handbrake to rear wheels and foot-operated transmission brake. Right hand drive. The Renault Type BZ received its obligatory French 'Type Approval' on the 28th December 1909, this being for Car Number 18700. This car, number 24159, was dispatched from the Renault works on the 13th August 1910. The difference between the two Car numbers gives an indication of the rate of Renault output at this time since all cars were numbered consecutively regardless of Type. The BZ was available with several differences in detail, options being available for the steering column rake and the chassis profile, the 'dropped' side-rails generally being used for formal coachwork. This car has the type normale fairly upright steering column, and the surbaissé chassis, a term more generally associated with sporty Amilcars of the Nineteen Twenties. In this case it permits a lowered floor for the passenger compartment of the handsome landaulet body, with therefore easier ingress and egress. The original records of Renault Limited, London, kindly made available by the Renault Frères club, do not give a dispatch date for the car but do note that it was sold to Merigold Bros. This firm has been traced to Preston, Lancashire; Merigold's being the Renault agents for the county. The coachwork carries body plates of 'Carriage Motor Body Builders, William Harding', and 'A.Roberts & Co Ltd., Body Builders, Preston.' Harding is a known Preston coachbuilders, Roberts are not apparently recorded, and who exactly did what is not known. However, this ties in to a nicety with the fact that the car was originally registered with the Lancashire index mark of B-96, presumably transferred by the owner from an earlier car since it is of 1904 issue, and also that in 1946 the car was owned by a Dr Archibald Russell of Preston who was a very early Veteran Car Club member, recorded as owning a 'Benz, etc.' The car appears to be in good order, mechanically correct, and has seen recent use. We are informed that it is a very practical Edwardian motorcar that performs in the appropriate manner. Although a French car with a strong Lancashire accent, it is in fact affectionately known as 'Butch'.
