In common with other motorcycle manufacturers Royal Enfield had its origins firstly in arms manufacture and later bicycles. Their motorcycle slogan was indeed ‘made like a gun’, indicating the precision engineering skills that the company brought to motorcycle production. The Redditch Company built their first De Dion Bouton-engined tricycles and quadricycles around the turn of the century, soon developing a motorcycle, although serious production did not commence until 1910. This machine is powered by a V-twin cylinder engine with side valves and fuelled by a Brown and Barlow carburettor. The old style green log book with the bike records a date of original registration of 6th January 1912 and the AA prefix suggests original registration in Hampshire. The machine is attractively finished with black frame, silver and green petrol tank with gold lettering and nickel fittings throughout. It is equipped with girder fork and coil spring front suspension, rear luggage carrier and a period style Brooks saddle. A later magneto is currently fitted. This exceptionally rare and early Royal Enfield comes with only an old style green log book, has been part of a private collection and has not seen recent active use, therefore will require the usual recommissioning.
