1914 SWIFT 7HP TWO SEATER CYCLECAR Registration No. AU 1107 Chassis No. 866 Engine No. E5696 Green with green fabric interior Engine: two-cylinder, vertical water-cooled, 75x110mm, bore & stroke, 972cc; Gearbox: 3-speed & reverse, cone clutch, shaft-drive to bevel back axle; Suspension: front and rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: hand and foot operated rear-wheel internal-expanding brakes. Right hand drive. Swift of Coventry progressed from making sewing machines, then bicycles, to becoming motorcar manufacturers from 1902 when the Swift Motor Company was formed. The cars produced were of conventional design, with one, two and four-cylinder engines in the medium horsepower bracket. This 7HP Swift dates from 1914, by which time the company production had evolved from the single cylinder Austin derived car to a twin cylinder cyclecar. 'AU 1107’ would have originally been registered in the Nottingham area as confirmed by the pre-fix to its number plate, though its subsequent history is not recorded. The car was purchased for the collection in the mid 1960s and it has not been used on the road since. The car’s condition generally reflects its long term sympathetic storage, but in recent weeks it has undergone some freshening and preparation for the sale, including polishing of its brass brightwork.
