THE FORD MODEL T
It's impossible to overstate the significance of Henry Ford's Model T. Arguably, no single invention, advancement, or new product has made a deeper, longer-reaching impact on the world we live in, though electrification, the adaptation of computers, and the unstoppable force of the internet come close. Of course, none of those would have been possible without the T.
The social implications of an inexpensive, durable, easy-to-operate, and widely available automobile were as wide-ranging as they were deep. Great leaps in chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, metallurgy, marketing, infrastructure, finance, labor, and politics were direct results of the mass mobilization of America, a phenomenon almost entirely attributable to the car Flappers called "The Flivver".
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This particular Model T serves as a prime example of early American speed tuning. A modified 1915 Torpedo Runabout derivative, the car sports an intriguing and well-considered collection of period correct upgrades, the highlight of which is a rare and exotic Rajo overhead-valve racing head.
Other notable modifications include the fitment of strong, lightweight Hayes wire wheels (in place of standard wooden items), the deletion of the standard folding top, various bodywork changes, and the addition of a modern alternator to complement a period Bosch magneto. Less speed-oriented, but no less cohesive additions include an eight-day mechanical clock, an electric horn, and an oil pressure gauge.
Thus equipped, the car likely tips the scales at a fair bit under its original ~1,2000 lbs., and could easily be developing nearly twice the 20 hp of Ford's standard valve-in-block engine. Flat-out, this Model T should be able to reach well in excess of a standard example's 45 mph top speed, with similarly modified cars reported to be good for nearly 70 mph!
