1922 DENNIS N TYPE TURBINE FIRE ENGINE Registration No. BH 0500 Car No. 4357 Engine No. 14019 Body No. 11168 Red Engine: White and Poppe, four cylinder, ; Gearbox: four speed manual with transfer to pump; Suspension: front and rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: two-wheel drum. Right hand drive. This is understood to be one of the very first 'proper' Dennis Fire engines, those that were built entirely by the company at their Guildford works. Recently inspected by knowledgeable enthusiast Murray Beale, who was able to provide various pieces of information of note and generally assess the machine. At which time he was able to confirm to Christie's and the owners that the fire engine is ostensibly as it would have been when new, with the main exception of the ladder, which should be a 40ft Ajax unit, rather than the more concise one fitted. Upon recent inspection, following some light re-commissioning, the Dennis started promptly, with an extremely strong and reassuring exhaust tone! The transmission to the fire pump was tested and is in working order, with no noticeable sounds of wear. The original ownership/service of the Fire Engine is not known, though it wears an original Buckinghamshire registration plate which may assist future research. It is known that later in its life it was in Norfolk, where it was in service at the hospital at East Raynham, accounting for the livery it still wears today. It is thought that there are only 2 or 3 of these still in working order, and that the total survival rate including those in museums may not even be into double figures. Aside, therefore from the sheer novelty factor and enjoyment that such a vehicle can offer, it is exceedingly rare and deserves careful inspection.
