1934 MG PA Registration No. VJ 6790 Chassis No. PA 1378 Engine No. 1645 AP Light blue over dark blue with blue interior. Engine: Four cylinder, single overhead camshaft, 847cc, 36bhp at 5500rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual and reverse, central change; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear. Right-hand drive. The MG Midget series began in 1929 and lasted until 1955. The theme centred on a basically similar channel section chassis for all models with semi-elliptic leaf springs, a beam axle at the front and a live axle at the rear, a four cylinder engine, and clad in two-door, two seater sports bodies. This proved to be an outstandingly successful formula which was to appeal to sports car enthusiasts of modest means whether embarking upon their motoring lives before marriage or returning to an emblem of their youth in middle age. Forebears of the PA included the M and J-Types, while possibly its best known successor was the T-Type which appeared in 1936 and in TC form survived the Second World War to become one of Britain's most successful early post war motoring exports to the USA. This 1934 example was supplied new by Richmond Car Sales in December of that year to F L Newall Esq at the RAF Flying Training School in Digby. Photocopy records in the large file of history show various correspondence between the MG Car Company and Mr Newall during its early months. The present owner purchased the car in 1990 as a restoration project and the car is now offered requiring some final completion. Work undertaken to date includes the fitting of new front and rear wings, new door frames and replacement woodwork as necessary to the body frame. The engine was stripped and the crank reground. The interior has been re-trimmed with new carpets, door trim and seats and the tonneau was renewed. The final work required should be relatively straightforward and includes re-fitting of the brakes, fuel lines, electrics and ancillary trim items. The car has its hood-frame which requires trimming. At the time of writing the Registration document was mislaid so a new keeper should re-apply for this paperwork. With a few hours fettling, this pretty MG should be soon back on the road and providing traditional open-air motoring.
