Top of the range in Sunbeam’s seven model line-up in 1936 was the 493cc overhead valve Model 9 Sports, priced at £70 and coming in at £4 more than the standard Model 9 machine. Prices that year generally reflected economic conditions and keen competition between British manufacturers and certainly looked good value compared with 1934 and 1935 models. The buyer of this machine would have paid an extra £5.10s for a Lucas Magdyno lighting set and £2.15s for a speedometer. Noxal were well-known sidecar manufacturers at the time and the single seater lightweight chair attached to this machine is one of their more distinctive and sporting designs, believed to date from 1927. Rare and well-sprung the vendor advises that it is ‘rides beautifully’. This machine comes with original log books recording just six previous owners from new, the first log book covering the period 1936 – 1946 and the next from 1946 – 1973. The machine is currently registered on a Swansea document. Supporting documentation includes old tax discs, spare parts manual and an owner’s manual. This machine has been in a museum for twenty years or so and is unrestored, retaining that wonderful patina that no restorer can recreate. During museum display we understand that it was checked over and started annually. Of museum quality and strictly for the connoisseur, this rare Model 9 Sports combination comes with an easy-load custom-built trailer which we understand tows well.
