Many Mercedes-Benz fans over the world doubted whether Mercedes could recover from the wartime bombings, but by the early 1950s they were producing not only trucks but a full range of cars, including a luxury model, the 300 sedan. This was immediately successful, and soon the directors of Daimler-Benz AG decided that there was a market for a luxury sports model as well. In 1952, the designers were given the go-ahead and they decided to work with the ingredients of the 300 sedan, repackaging them into a svelte two-door model. The short-chassis "S" series of 300's were first shown at the 1952 Salon de Paris where they created a sensation. These gorgeous sports-luxury cars were built for the rich and famous. With a price tag of about $12,500, they were the top-of-the-line Mercedes, ten times the price of the standard American luxury car. Movie stars like Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Judy Garland and Bing Crosby bought 300 S models, as did many other prominent people including the Shah of Iran, the Aga Khan and the King of Jordan. Unfortunately, production of the lovely short-chassis 300 models ceased in 1957 because each car was so labor-intensive that Daimler-Benz lost money on every car they produced. Only 560 were built in all. Mr. Gallup purchased this car in November 1977. In 1992, he commissioned the restoration services of Robin Onsoein, who completed a nut and bolt body-off restoration that took over four years and approximately 2,600 hours to complete. The restorer went to extreme lengths to ensure the finest result, including ordering the last eight yards of correct stock top material from the Mercedes-Benz factory at a cost of over $3,000 - no expense was spared. It is painted in its original color, and the chrome work was completed at Christensen Plating. Total cost on the restoration came to a little over $200,000. This practically brand new car has hardly been used since all the restoration work was completed. Naturally, this gorgeous 300 S Cabriolet has all of the amenities, including a complete four piece fitted luggage set for the rear compartment, and comes with a complete set of tools. The moss green leather interior is highlighted with cream piping and beautifully complimented by the burled walnut trim. This 300 S is the finest we have ever had the pleasure of offering.
