1954 TRIUMPH TR2 SPORTS TWO-SEATER Registration No. RSU 715 Chassis No. TS5158 Engine No. TS194FR White and black with red leather interior. Engine: four cylinder, 1,991cc, 90bhp at 4800rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual with overdrive; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: independent front with coil springs, wishbones and telescopic dampers, live rear axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs. Right hand drive. Designed as a small sports car and offered with a low price and high performance, the TR2 was the first in a long line of successful Triumph TR sports cars. The low price was achieved by utilising as many standard parts as possible from the other less sporting models and assembling them as a two-seater clothed in an all-new body. Competing against the MG TF and Plus 4 Morgan, the TR2 was held in high esteem and its sporting achievements subsequently confirmed this status. Production began properly in early 1954 and with their effortless performance and strong reliability, the TR2 sold well. By the Autumn of 1954 improvements were introduced, the most notable of which was the change to short doors with a fixed sill running underneath that had the double effect of stiffening the body shell and also enabling the doors to be opened against high curbs. The example on offer here has travelled, quite amazingly, just 20,177 miles, having been in the same family ownership since 1958. Indeed, an invoice on file confirms the mileage in October 1965 to have been 19,516 and we are told that in the last five years it has not even travelled more than 200 miles. The car was purchased as a replacement for a 3½ litre Jaguar saloon, which had become too cumbersome to drive, and the lady owner wished for something smaller but with sporting pretentions. A family friend was the local garage proprietor and he suggested the TR2. As it turned out, the car was hardly used but nonetheless sensibly dry-stored and protected. Upon inspection now the panelwork is all well fitting and the colour combination of white with black sides is particularly attractive; it has been repainted in its life and the paintwork now is perfectly acceptable. It is a short door car and also features stainless steel beading along the wing/body shell joints, TR2 grille badge, front fog and spot lights, boot-mounted spot light (which was a later addition), integral tail lamps and globe hub caps. The interior of the car is all totally original with red carpeting, red dash surround and red seats and the car also has its original "occasional" rear seat which was an optional extra when new. It sports its original sidescreens, tonneau cover, soft top, starting handle, jack and wheel brace. The private lady vendor has always looked after the car and in 1988 it was re-wired and a new set of tyres and new exhaust system were fitted. A new front bumper was fitted after a small altercation many years ago (coincidentally, in the Beaulieu area) and the car has its original engine. It started first time and when warmed up ticked over evenly with a crisp exhaust note. The car carries the registration mark RSU 715, the original number KTP 582 having been lost when the changeover to the new registration system occured, (although it should now be possible to re-apply for the original number). It is sold with an old style log book which cites the original registration as being from January 1955, although the chassis number confirms it to be a 1954 car. There is also a V5 registration document and the car has an MoT certificate until July 1997. Triumph TR2s are still immensely popular sports cars and this particular example is surely an absolute gem with its history and incredibly low mileage.
