1956 BENTLEY S1 Chassis No. B379LAP Engine No. BA 439 Silver with red coachline and beige leather interior Engine: six cylinder in-line, 4,887cc, 178bhp at 4,500rpm; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: front, independent with unequal length wishbones and coil springs, rear, semi-elliptic springs; Brakes: four wheel drum. Left hand drive. The final version of the classic six cylinder Bentley was the S1, produced between 1955 and 1959. The S1 and its Silver Cloud stablemate had a greatly strengthened chassis which provided 50 more torsional rigidity than the old Silver Dawn and MkVI. The suspension and braking were also improved and many agree that this was the most stylish of all the standard Bentleys. The S1 was also a considerably more roomy car than its predecessor. This example was supplied by the New York agents J. Inskip Inc. to a Mr. John A. Morgan at the Hotel Croyden in New York on 29 March 1956. Features included a radio, Dunlop black sided tires and a speedo reading in mph. The car passed through a few more owners until it joined Mr. Fuller's collection. Today it is now showing some signs of age and it has been repainted silver with a red coachline. There are a couple of areas with minor flaking and blistering. The brightwork is generally acceptable with the rear bumper requiring attention. Mechanically, it started from cold straight away and we noticed a slight tappet noise and muffler rattle - we are informed that the engine has been rebuilt. The interior is original, slightly older now and would probably benefit from refurbishing. Air conditioning and seat belts are fitted. Time constraints prevented a more comprehensive road test and it is offered as viewed. WITHOUT RESERVE
