1960 Austin-Healey 3000 MkI Rally Car Registration no. SFF 176 Chassis no. HBN7-L6861• Built to 'works' specification by Northern Healey Centre • Highly developed over the years • Present ownership since 1994 • Many-time international historic rally competitor Footnotes"A classic competition car among the all-time greats in motoring history," was how The Autocar magazine summed up the works Austin-Healey 3000 in 1963. Yet at the time of its arrival in 1959, few would have guessed that the low-slung 'Big Healey' would triumph over its apparent shortcomings so effectively that it now rates as one of the most successful rally cars of the 1960s. Robust and tuneable, the Big Healey was immensely popular with privateers in its time, and today, almost 40 years after the end of production, continues to be extensively campaigned in historic motor sport, both in tarmac events and on the rough stuff. Replicas of the works rally cars are among the most sought-after variants, and an extensive cottage industry of recognised specialists exists to cater for the demand for Big Healey parts, servicing and competition preparation. This left-hand drive Austin-Healey 3000 was exported new to Florida, USA in 1960 and brought back to the UK in 1993. Acquired by the present owner in 1994, the car was then treated to an extensive restoration to 'works' rally specification by marque specialists Northern Healey Centre, who have continued to maintain and develop the car throughout its rallying career. 'SFF 176' has been a regular competitor on Le Jog (seven occasions) and the Monte Carlo Challenge (six occasions), as well as a host of high-profile rallies the length and breadth of Europe and beyond including the Tour de France Classic and Liège-Rome-Liège (full list available). The engine incorporates a balanced crankshaft and forged pistons, and breathes via triple SU carburettors, while the gearbox is of the 'Tulip' type with remotely switched overdrive. Other notable specification highlights of this highly developed rallying Healey include the following: Long-range fuel tank Alternator electrics Kenlowe electric cooling fan Twin batteries with isolators Dual electrical charging system Dual brake servos Twin fuel pumps Dual coils Oversize oil pressure warning light Roll cage Intercom Map reading light Aeronautical compass Cibié Oscar spotlights Air horn Lucas reversing light Tow loops (front and rear) Period bucket seats Five-point safety harnesses Little used in recent years, and offered with a V5C Registration Certificate, this highly developed and potentially most competitive 'Big Healey' rally car wants only for an enthusiastic new owner to continue its illustrious historic competition career.
