1960 BENTLEY S2 STANDARD STEEL SALOON EU registered Chassis No. B. 289 LBR Engine No. 144 BB Lugano blue with tan hide interior and blue piping to the seats. Engine: V8, overhead valve, 6,230cc, 200bhp at 4500rpm; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: front, independent coil, rear semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: front, hydraulic and mechanical rear with servo. Left hand drive. At the 1959 London Motor Show, Rolls-Royce introduced their first alloy V-8 engine in both the Silver Cloud II and its equivalent the Bentley S2. This 6.2 litre engine with hydraulic tappets operating overhead valves, produced an impressive 200bhp at 4,500rpm. A large percentage of alloy was used in the engine construction, enabling a similar weight to be obtained to its 4.8 litre six cylinder predecessor. The result was a larger, more powerful engine providing an extremely smooth power curve and top speed well in excess of 110mph. The American Hydramatic automatic transmission and power steering completed the modernisation, making the S2 a much more comfortable car to drive than the S1. Other changes from the earlier series included a smaller steering wheel, improvements in the braking system and variations in the instrument panel. Whilst coachwork was available from the small number of remaining coachbuilders, the option of Standard Steel bodywork, which had debuted on the Mark VI, was now increasingly popular. In the ownership of the Late Ado Blaton since 1987, the Bentley was originally built to US specification and delivered to its first owner Mr. R. D. Wasserman of New York City in August of 1960. The car was factory fitted with a radio, electric windows, safety belts to the front seats, shaded Sundym glass to the windshield only and Dunlop Buffalo white sided tyres. The car then passed to Mrs. Mary E. Eriksson of Scottsdale Arizona in 1974, the dry climate helping preserve the car in rust-free condition. In May 1986 the car remained in the Western U.S. and passed to Mr. Wade H. Lane of Glendale Arizona, before returning to Europe to join the Ado Blaton stable the following year. The car has subsequently been regularly maintained and driven sparingly. Showing a current odometer reading of 9,288km this is possibly the mileage it has covered while in this collection. When recently inspected by a Christie's specialist the car appeared in very good overall condition, started promptly and the engine ran quietly and sweetly. This Bentley is a good example presenting very well with its elegant colour scheme, and has a known chain of ownership and left hand drive configuration. It should therefore make an attractive proposition for anyone wishing to enjoy classic motoring in style with friends, attend events of the Bentley Drivers Club or compete in historic regularity rallies so popular these days in particular throughout Europe.
