Left hand drive. Everything Jaguar had learned about sports cars during its legendary five victories at Le Mans in the 1950s went into the E-Type. Introduced at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1961, it used an updated version of the wonderful straight-six XK series engine in Sir William Lyons' stunningly beautiful monocoque bodyshell and was immediately acclaimed for its elegance and value for money. Evolution of the car took several years. The tubular chassis of the C-Type sport racers of 1951-2, the central monocoque of the mid-1950s D-Types and later the fully independent suspension of E2A - raced at Le Mans by Briggs Cunningham - were all important staging points underlining the production E-Type's impeccable pedigree. There was little doubt that this beautifully finished and equipped two-seater was one of the fastest cars that could be purchased, and there was the reassurance that all the performance was now matched by sophisticated brakes, handling, and outstanding cornering power. It was an immediate and lasting success and is now regarded as one of the most important designs of a brilliant era. This stunning red E-Type Jaguar roadster represents one of the earliest cars off the production line. Early features that distinguish these models include the flat floor and welded bonnet louvres. To many collectors these early cars epitomize the purest form of the glorious E-Type. We are told that this car was sold new to someone living in the wealthy Main Line district on the outskirts of Philadelphia. For the past 20 years or so this Jaguar has resided in the Southampton area of Long Island. Recently the car has benefited from new black leather upholstery to the seats, some new carpeting and a new top boot with matching red piping. Additionally the car has had a complete tune up and service and upon a recent inspection the engine sounded particularly healthy. The current mileage is reading some 85,000 miles which we believe is the mileage from new. It comes equipped with its original Operating Maintenance and Service handbook, Warranty card (although not filled out), original tool roll with one or two small tools absent and jack. This early E-Type roadster warrants attention from any enthusiast of this famous British marque.
