1964 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Roadster Lot Number 177 Registration PRX 354B Chassis Number 11304220003307 Engine Number 1270110801 Odometer reading 53,000 miles Estimate £29,000 - £35,000 Result Sold - £39,200 Print details Send this to a friend The Mercedes-Benz W113 SL was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz technical director Fritz Nallinger, chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and head of styling, Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi who created its distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop which inspired the 'Pagoda' nickname. The model was manufactured from 1963 through to 1971 and boasted an in-line straight six-engine with multi-port fuel injection. Mercedes-Benz chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who was as competent behind the wheel as most racing drivers, demonstrated the capabilities of the 230 SL on a tight short race track near Montreux in 1963 where he put up a best lap time of 47.5 seconds and, incidentally, out-performed Mike Parkes in his Ferrari 250GT. This particular righthand drive manual 230 SL Pagoda, presented in white with contrasting red interior, was originally imported from Florida in 1990 and purchased by the current vendor in 1991. Having owned the car for over 25 years, there is not much he does not know about his 230 SL. He has recently spent over £14,000 with Curran Autos, a local Mercedes-Benz restoration specialist, on an engine rebuild, brake overhaul, service, new tyres and an MoT test; this extensive recommissioning took place over the last two years. Prior to this, the Pagoda has predominantly been off the road and garaged which is borne out by previous sporadic MoT test certificates confirming the car travelled less than 1,500 miles since 1998. Having a new MoT test certificate, this pretty Pagoda is a very useable classic and offers an excellent start point for further cosmetic restoration if desired. The Pagoda has a timeless elegance without losing its sporty note and in recent years has become highly sought after and a collectable investment.
