Introduced at the Geneva Salon in March 1963 as the replacement for the 190SL, the 230SL is a landmark model which founded a sports car dynasty that would prove an enormous commercial success for Mercedes-Benz The 230SL abandoned its predecessor's four-cylinder engine in favour of a 2.3-litre fuel-injected six derived from that of the 220SE and producing 150bhp. An instant classic, the body design was entirely new while beneath the skin the running gear was conventional Mercedes-Benz, featuring all-round independent suspension (by swing axles at the rear), disc front/drum rear brakes and a choice of four-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Top speed was in excess of 120mph. The Mercedes-Benz 230SL was owned by countless film stars and celebrities, becoming one of the iconic sports cars of the 1960s, and even managed a debut competition victory in the Spa-Sofia-Liège Rally. Christened 'pagoda top' after their distinctive cabin shape, these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day and continue to be highly sought after by collectors. This US-specification 230SL was first registered on 21st February 1964 in Paris to an American, David Ross who kept it for the next 38 years. In 2002 (at 95,759 miles) the car was sold to its second owner, a collector, who displayed the 230SL in a small museum in the Périgord region for seven years. When the current (third) owner bought the car in March 2008 it had covered 96,000 miles, to which he has added a further 9,000 since. While in the vendor's care the 230SL has benefited from considerable refurbishment, being re-sprayed, re-trimmed and fitted with the following new parts: complete ignition system; front lights; clutch; steering column; front brake discs; rear brake cylinders; fuel pump; engine fuel, oil and water lines; and radiator. A lovely example of the model with continuous history, the car is offered with service book stamped up to November 1993 (at 92,000 miles), sundry restoration invoices, French Carte Grise and Contrôle Technique.
