1965-66 ROBERTO CLEMENTE PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE CONTRACT

Estimate
US$8,000 - US$12,000
Price realised:
US$5,000
Beschreibung:

1965-66 Roberto Clemente Puerto Rican League Contract While Hiram Bithorn was the first Puerto Rican to play in the major leagues, Roberto Clemente is the most famous. In this signed contract Clemente agreed to play for Los Nuevos Senadores for the 1965-66 Puerto Rican winter season for $1,000 per month. He also held baseball clinics for kids. In 1965, Clemente enjoyed another All-Star and Gold Glove season, leading the league in batting at .329. Despite fatigue, as he did every year, Clemente headed to his native island to play for the Senators. The winter ball must have been good for him, as he won his only NL MVP in the 1966 MLB season. Clemente's influence on Puerto Rican players continues to this day. Bernie Williams remarked, "Growing up in Puerto Rico we got to learn a lot about his character, it was obvious that not only was he one of the greatest players, but a great human being as well." The contract is in overall excellent condition with minor wear and folds.
