Mercedes-Benz debuted four new models at the Frankfurt Show in 1959 - the 220SEb among them - all of which shared the same basic unitary construction bodyshell and all-round independent suspension. Longer than their predecessors, the newcomers featured a wider radiator shell, wrap-around windscreen, wider rear window and vertically positioned twin headlamps. The new 220SEb retained the fuel-injected, single-overhead-camshaft engine of the previous 220SE, though maximum power of the 2,195cc six was increased by five horsepower to 120bhp (DIN). Top speed was now 107mph (170km/h) with 60mph (97km/h) attainable in under 14 seconds. Coupé and Convertible models appeared in 1961, minus the already dated-looking tail fins of the saloon. More modern in style, the 220SEb Coupé and Convertible were better appointed too, being equipped as standard with a rev-counter, leather upholstery and four-speed automatic transmission. Front disc brakes were fitted from the start of production, a benefit not enjoyed by the 220SEb saloon until 1962. With coachwork hand-built at Sindelfingen and a triple layer soft-top, the 220SE Cabriolet was produced in very limited numbers and just 2,729 were built by the time production ceased in 1965. This factory right-hand drive 220SE Cabriolet presents in good condition throughout, with a lovely interior that has clearly benefited from some restoration work. The body has received new paint at some point in its life and shows some wear in areas while the headlights have also been converted the American specification units. The hood is in good working order and condition and the car runs and drives well. A fine example of this charismatic and rare open topped Mercedes-Benz, the car is to be sold registered in New South Wales.
