The 220SEb was one of four new models debuted by Mercedes-Benz at the Frankfurt Show in 1959. The 220SE’s fuel-injected, single-overhead-camshaft six was retained, though maximum power increased to 120bhp (DIN). Top speed was now 107mph with 60mph attainable in under 14 seconds. Luxurious Coupe and Convertible models appeared in 1961, minus the already dated-looking tail fins of the saloon. More modern in style, the 220SEb Coupe and Convertible were better appointed too, being equipped as standard with a rev counter, leather upholstery, front disc brakes and four-speed automatic transmission with floor-mounted gear-change lever. Finished in green with light tan leather interior, this right-hand drive 220SEb Coupe has the four-speed automatic transmission. The car was sold new to John Hoadley, proprietor of ‘The Spanish City’ in Whitley Bay, and then via Cowies of Stockton to Mr Jack Horsman. The present owner first encountered the car in 1970, again at Cowies, recalling that it was “love at first sight”. ‘CEF 642C’ would be the first of many Mercedes-Benz cars he owned, and though many came and went, this favourite was always retained. The 220SEb had covered 20,000 miles when purchased, and after demotion to ‘second car’ status following the acquisition of a 450SEL, was kept garaged for many years. Then, in the late 1970s, the vendor joined the Mercedes-Benz Enthusiasts Club and undertook the car’s refurbishment, fitting new front wings and new carpets. Its use subsequently was confined to rallies. The vendor reports that the only other significant work has been some chassis welding, and that on the servicing side everything needed has been done, resulting in a virtually trouble free 34 years motoring. Its owner’s advancing years and relocation to a smaller house force the car’s reluctant sale. Presented in very good condition throughout, the vehicle is offered with road fund licence/MoT to July 2005 and Swansea V5 registration document.
