Description The 1966 Mercedes Benz 300SEb is a rare car these days, this being one of 17 still on the road in the UK. Supplied new on 28th April 1966 to Mercedes Benz Great West Road, this car may have been the personal transport of the MD. It was sold by Mercedes in 1968 to Mr RJ Hinves and kept by him for 25 years (a drawing by Mr Hinves’ young son recording the happy day of the car’s arrival is in the extensive record transferred with the car, which includes the original handbook). In February 2003 and had it converted into a classic rally car. A bespoke, now quite loud stainless steel exhaust system by Hayward and Scott fitted at this time, is available to the new owner “FOC” on collection. Rondeau used the car for classic road rallies including the 2005 Winter Challenge. Fellow rally man Robin Shackleton took it over in 2009 before selling it to Oldham dentist Andy Lane, who promptly won the 2009 Le Jog from Lands End to John O’Groats in it, navigated by Iain Tullie. After a further win on the Tour of Wessex in 2010 and a less successful Le Jog effort in 2011 the car lay unused until it was purchased by Canadian driver Branko Brkovitch, who authorised a program of re-commissioning, carried out by marque specialists Roger Edwards Motors. Works included a complete £5,000 overhaul of the braking system, including new calipers etc., and a new exhaust system. Reappearing, the car took 2nd overall after leading the 2012 Liege–Rome rally, then placed well on the 2013 Poppy Rally in Belgium before again recording a top ten finish on the 2013 London–Lisbon event. It has participated in the last three three Castles Welsh Classic Trials, finishing 20th overall in 2014. With a fresh set of Kumho R900s on which it still sits, it also completed the Rally of the Tests in 2013. After that event Tony Fowkes Automobiles carried out a winter gearbox rebuild and comprehensive rewiring and tidying in readiness for the 2014 season. Bills for all this work are with the car. On Mr. Brkovitch’s retirement, the car passed in June 2014 to a friend and well known Mercedes SL enthusiast, who completed the East Anglian Classic and Regis rallies. The vendor describes the car as very genuine, performing well mechanically, full of character and “a hoot to drive” while in need of some bodywork attention and general maintenance. A FIVA card, long MOT and V5 are with the car, on which approximately £17,500 has been spent in the last three years.
