Triumph introduced the Spitfire at the London Motor Show in 1962. Designed as a small two seat sports car the vehicle was based on a design produced for Standard Triumph in 1957 by Italian designer Michelotti. The platform for the car was largely based upon the chassis, engine, and running gear of the Triumph Herald saloon, and was manufactured at the Standard-Triumph works at Canley in Coventry The bodywork was fitted onto a separate structural chassis and being designed as an open top sports car, the chassis and the bodywork was reinforced for additional rigidity. The Spitfire was supplied with a manual hood for weather protection; in addition the factory manufactured hard-tops that could also be purchased and fitted for use in winter months. In 1965 the Spitfire 4 Mk II was introduced, as an intermediate model that would only run until the MkIII arrived in 1967. The Mk II used a more powerful version of the Herald derived 1147 cc engine as used in the MkI, it now developed an extra 4bhp (now 67bhp) due to a revised camshaft. The Mk II now came equipped with carpet and leather cloth trim covering the previously painted surfaces. Offered today is an example of the Spitfire 4 MkII variant with the benefit of a factory built hardtop, soft top, tonneau cover and wire wheels. Having recently undergone an extensive, no costs barred restoration; the car now sits resplendent with Royal Blue coachwork. The recent restoration was carried out over a three year period with many new parts included as can be seen within the history file, some of these include; a new fuel tank, fuel pump, seats, carpets and a stainless steel exhaust amongst many others. The five wire wheels are shod with new tyres. Some upgrades have been added that, these include; electronic ignition, a wood rim steering wheel and in 2010 a replacement mohair hood was fitted. A period radio is fitted but is not wired in. These early Spitfires are now attracting the attention of serious collectors and this is confirmed by the increasing value of these motor cars. It is rare to find an early example in this condition; it is therefore recommended that you inspect the undersides, engine bay and examine the panel gaps to confirm for yourself of the fine condition of this car on offer. With cheap and plentiful specialist service and parts support by many companies within the UK, enjoying and maintaining this car on the road should prove easy and inexpensive. With a current MoT test certificate and road fund license, this car is ready to enjoy immediately. 'Tally ho!'.
