The Alfa Romeo Spider is widely regarded as a design classic. It remained in production for almost three decades with only minor aesthetic and mechanical changes. The first presentation of the car, as a prototype, was at the Turin Motor Show in 1961; however, the continuing success of existing models and the economic challenges facing Italy at the time, meant that the first pre-launch production Spiders only began to emerge from the Pininfarina production line at the end of 1965. Unnamed at launch, the name 'Duetto' was chosen in a write-in competition in Italy. The Italian firm of Pininfarina was responsible for the design of the body; in fact, the Duetto was the last project with which founder Battista 'Pinin' Farina was personally associated. Records show that this very early and rare matching-numbers Boat-Tailed 1750cc Duetto Spider manufactured in righthand drive format and first registered in the UK on the 1st May, 1968. The history file has ownership details and photographs from the period 1978 to 1989 together with detailed ownership information, service history and parts receipts from March 2005. The present owner has had the car from July 2009, during which time it has covered just 678 miles. On acquiring the car in 2009, it was fitted with a reconditioned gearbox, clutch and gearbox mounting by DTR Sportscars in Surrey. Since then it has received over £1,800 of Alfa Romeo re-fittings, including a new mohair hood, new lights and internal chrome work. The car was damaged (recorded category D by HPI) and fully rebuilt in 2001 and fully refurbished again in 2004/5 by an Alfa classic specialists. The engine bay is also very tidy having been subjected to the same 2004/5 rebuild. It then went on to win 'Best Alfa of the Day' at the Scottish Italian Car Day 2012 and comes with an MoT test certificate valid until September 2016 and historic status road fund licence valid until 1st September, 2016. With prices of these Duetto Spiders approaching in the region of £25,000 to £30,000, this rare UK registered righthand drive Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider represents excellent value given its extremely modest estimate.
