1969 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL CONVERTIBLE SPORTS TWO SEATER Chassis No. 12-005865 Metallic blue with black leather interior and black canvas top Engine: six cylinder, overhead camshaft, Bosch fuel injection, 2,778cc, 170bhp at 5,700rpm; Gearbox: four-speed automatic; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: four wheel disc. Left hand drive. The Super Leicht series of Mercedes sports cars began in the late 1950s with the 300SL and 190SL. The two series were resounding successes as both cars were mechanically sound, offered impressive performance and were very well styled. In 1963 both were replaced by the wider and more angular 2.3 litre 230SL. Within the next several years, engine modifications continued in the model and by 1967 the engine had grown to 2.8 litres. By that time the 230SL had been renumbered as the 280SL and included standard disc brakes, as well as other driving comforts. The Mercedes-Benz on offer was originally delivered in red, however, it was repainted in the attractive color scheme of metallic blue during its restoration in the mid 1980s. The current owner purchased the Mercedes in 1987 complete with both hard and soft tops. We understand that the car is driven on a regular basis by its Pebble Beach owner, who also reports that the Mercedes has just over 139,000 miles and received a complete overhaul at 90,000 miles. Unfortunately, ill health no longer permits the owner to enjoy driving the car on a regular basis. WITHOUT RESERVE
