1969 PLYMOUTH ROAD RUNNER CONVERTIBLE Chassis No. RM27H9G292947 Rallye red (orange) with black vinyl interior and black convertible top Engine: overhead valve V8, 383ci, 335bhp at 5,200rpm, Carter AFB carburetor model 4615S; Gearbox: four-speed manual; Suspension: optional heavy duty suspension package with firm ride shock absorbers; Brakes: optional brake package - front discs and rear drums. Left hand drive. Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, 1968 - The Pontiac GTO and Ford Mustang were about to receive a wake up call. Adorned with a familiar cartoon decal, Plymouth's new release took to the streets, ready to explain its creative moniker and unseen capabilities. Equipped with a 383 cubic inch engine and four speed gearbox, the 335 horsepower Plymouth sent the engineers of Ford and Pontiac back to the drawing board in search of more ponies and a cure for the slight discomfort in their rear ends. Plymouth managed to combine the outright awesome power of the very expensive GTX, throw in some clever marketing, remove most of the costly trim and high end standard equipment and create a surefire formula for the successful and unbeatable car every teenage boy in America would trade their sister for. The 1968 Road Runner was first introduced as a two-door coupe and then a short time later as a hardtop. The Road Runner Convertible was offered for the first time in 1969. The Road Runner was an instant success in 1968 and by the close of 1969 the car had been named Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year. Plymouth records indicate that approximately 80,000 cars had been sold that year, nearly doubling the previous year's total. The optional equipment list was expanded as well. Bucket seats, AM/FM radio with cassette deck, power windows, steering and brakes, alternative bumpers, wheels, tires, gearboxes, colors, trim, suspension, engines, gauges and even seat cushions could be selected by the buyer to fully individualize and create a personalized muscle car no one else could claim as their own. The Road Runner on offer here is finished in the factory color of Rallye red and is equipped with the awesome 383 cubic inch engine with a manual four speed gearbox and an 8¾ Chrysler Hemi rear end. The interior is black vinyl and features the optional bucket seats, center console with armrests, a black power top, black interior carpeting, optional back up lights, power steering, AM/FM radio and factory ordered dashboard tachometer. Th Road Runner is complete with the correct Carter Aluminum Four Barrel carburetor and has recently had a set of Magnum 500 wheels fitted to the Widetrack R/T tires. We understand that this Road Runner is in stunning overall condition with the hand-rubbed catalyzed Rallye red paint showing excellently. Notably, the panel fit, a feature Plymouth seemed to have some difficulty with, is understood to be excellent and superior to most examples. The interior is in very clean and presentable overall condition and the vendor reports that the engine compartment and motor will be thoroughly detailed prior to the sale. The optional Air Grabber scoop, operated by an under-dash cable-actuated switch, is reported to be in good working order as well. This very impressive example is one of only 2,076 Road Runner Convertibles built in 1969. Accordingly, combined with its options, stunning condition, low production numbers and unbeatable street prowess, this 1969 Road Runner Convertible is highly desirable. As the early 1970s began, so did the decline of the muscle car, however 31 years later, horsepower has returned. There are truly no contemporary motor cars that can compare to the mighty muscle and style of the Road Runner. WITHOUT RESERVE
