1970 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 SL CONVERTIBLE SPORTS TWO-SEATER Chassis No. 133.044/12-016607 Dark blue with parchment interior, both hard and soft tops Engine: six cylinder, overhead-camshaft, Bosch fuel injection, 2,778cc, 170bhp; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Brakes: four wheel servo disc; Suspension: independent front and rear. Left hand drive. The Super Leicht series of Mercedes-Benz sportscars began in the late 1950s with the 300 SL and 190 SL. In 1963 both were replaced by the wider and more angular 2.3 liter 230 SL which grew in engine size to 2.5 liters and in late 1967 was increased to 2.8 liters. Both the latter types had four wheel disc brakes. The 280 SL remained in production until the spring of 1971, when 23,885 had been built--more than all its sporting predecessors except the 190 SL. A new shape was adapted for the 350 SL of 1971, but this car was a rather different concept with an ultra-smooth V-8 engine rather than the straight six 280 SL. Many experts feel this to have been the last true Mercedes-Benz sportscar. This very sound car has both a hard top and a new navy blue soft top. The former is the classic factory supplied pagoda-shaped style. The engine is said to run extremely well and has just benefitted from a major service; in addition, the interior woodwork has been refurbished. The 280 SL has a recorded mileage of approximately 86,000 miles and has the appearance of an exceptionally well-maintained vehicle.
