1970 MERCEDES BENZ 280SE 3.5 LITRE CONVERTIBLE Registration No. RMA 3H Chassis No. 280SE/935 Engine No. TBA Metallic Mid-Green with tan leather upholstery. Engine: V-8, overhead camshafts, fuel injection producing 240bhp at 6,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: fully independent by wishbones and coil springs to front and swing axle rear; Brakes: four wheel servo-assisted hydraulic. Right-hand drive. Daimler-Benz realised they had somehow left a gap in the market following the end to production of the long-running '300' series some years earlier. With typical thoroughness they re-entered the market for a luxury sports model initially with the 220SE using a six-cylinder power-plant and introduced in 1961. This was developed through a series of derivatives and in 1969 the 'S-series' was updated by the introduction of a brand new V-8 motor whilst the body styles followed those designs with minor modifications from 1961. The ultimate version was undoubtedly the 280SE with Cabriolet coachwork, which was without doubt the most stylish and sporting of the open fast touring cars. Although clearly descended from the previous models, it challenged every other specialist manufacturer with new standards of performance, luxury and engineering specification. Imparting a top speed of over 120mph, the lusty power-plant could project this heavy, lavishly equipped car to 60mph in around 10 seconds, with road manners in keeping with the out-and-out sports machines, whilst the roomy body allowed full capacity for five persons in comfort and refinement. Expensive when new, yet even three decades later this majestic styling shows an elegance of a timeless classic. Not produced in large numbers, exclusive in its day, this is a real rarity in right-hand drive form, especially with the more powerful V-8 engine. Although it has spent the last three years in storage and shows some signs of wear & tear, the bodywork is very sound and the paint-work quite presentable. The mechanical condition seems good and the engine is responsive and willing. We would recommend a thorough check-over before committing back to regular road use, and it is clear that a new hood will be a requirement. When such works are carried out this should prove to be a very comfortable and elegant high-speed touring car.
