The last of a popular and extremely successful line begun with the 230SL of 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL was introduced in 1967. Although similar in basic, seven-main-bearing architecture to that of the preceding 250SL, the 280's overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine was entirely new. Maximum power output of the Bosch fuel-injected type M130 unit was up from 150 to 180bhp, and while the 280SL's 190km/h-plus (118mph) top speed was no greater, it was significantly quicker off the mark than the 250, its 0-100km/h (0-62mph) time of 10 seconds being a whole second better than its predecessor's. Otherwise the 280SL remained mechanically virtually identical to the 250SL, with independent suspension all round and four-wheel disc brakes. Christened 'pagoda top' after their distinctive cabin shape, these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day and remain highly sought after by collectors. Enjoying only one registered owner since first sold in September 1970, this exceptionally well preserved 280SL has covered just 53,000 kilometres from new and is offered with complete service history booklet, its last service (in 2002 at 52,000 kilometres) including overhaul of the braking system. An automatic transmission model, the car is original and un-restored except for a highest-quality repaint in its original Mercedes-Benz antique white livery carried out three years ago. Although un-restored, the superb interior's Cognac leather upholstery, woodwork, carpets and chrome all appear like new, as does the black original soft-top and original white hardtop, the latter affording the benefit of a heated rear window. The engine bay and boot likewise are exceptionally well presented, while door gaps and exterior brightwork are described as 'perfect'.
