Right hand drive. The Super Leicht series of Mercedes-Benz sports cars began in the 1950's, the 190SL first appearing in 1954. The 230SL followed in 1963 and although strictly a touring car it enjoyed some success in the Liege-Sofia-Liege Rally. In 1967 the engine capacity was increased to 2.8 litres and four wheel disc brakes were introduced to create the 280SL which remained in production until 1971. The Mercedes 280SL is a truly exceptional example of Benz quality and styling which makes it one of the most sought after classics of today. Considered by many to be the most practical sports car of its generation, it offers the excitement of a sports cabriolet which more than holds its own in today's driving conditions. After the success of the 230SL and the 250SL models, Mercedes went on to produce the definitive 280SL which retained the elegant body shape with the addition of the more powerful 2778cc injection engine. Many enthusiasts feel that the 280SL with its crisp, sporting styling was the last true Mercedes-Benz sports car. This 1970 model has the distinction of having won first prize at the prestigious 1996 Mercedes National Day Sports car section at Castle Howard. In taking this award it realised the owner's ambition to win against the best in its class. The car has received sympathetic retoration, with care taken to retain its original appeal.
