1972 FERRARI 365 GTS/4 DAYTONA SPYDER COACHWORK BY PININFARINA, BUILT BY SCAGLIETTI Chassis No. 14605 Red with beige leather interior and black top Engine: V-12, four-cam, 4,390cc, 355bhp at 7,500rpm; Gearbox: five-speed manual integral with final drive; Suspension: all independent with double wishbones and coil springs; Brakes: four wheel disc. Left hand drive. The Daytona was the most 'macho' of all Ferraris, the last of the great front-engined Berlinettas in the long line of 12 cylinder front engined Ferraris. It became an instant collector's classic before production ceased. Dr. Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina was primarily responsible for the Daytona Berlinetta sensational and fluid lines. When announced, Ferrari claimed the new engine developed 355bhp at 7,500rpm and provided a top speed in excess of 180mph, making it the fastest production car in the world, a title it retained during the six years it was on sale. The early cars were road tested internationally at 172mph flat out and 13.8 seconds over the standing-start 400 meters. Due to this, many enthusiastic would-be owners, particularly on the American west coast, eagerly awaited a soft-top Spyder version. Their requests were fulfilled in September 1969 when the factory Daytona Spyder was unveiled by Pininfarina at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Their conversion of the basic Berlinetta into Spyder form has been described by Ferrari authority Antoine Prunet as ... remarkably successful, and the sharp edge formed by the rear deck and the rear fenders harmonized perfectly with the rest of the design, which was not changed from the Berlinetta. Only the Borrani wire wheels, which replaced alloy wheels, were different, but then they were also available on the Berlinetta as an option. It appears that a total of some 1,383 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytonas were manufactured between 1968 and their cessation of production in 1973, among which the genuine Spyders such as this one form a much sought after minority. There is slight controversy over the exact numbers made, however it would appear that only 120 Spyders were built. This example was apparently first owned by Marisa Berenson, model and actress who appeared in numerous films including Cabaret (1972) and Stanley Kubrick's action adventure film, Barry Lyndon (1975), from 1972-79 and was then sold to Mr. Millett via a dealer when the mileage was just 5,831. The indicated mileage now is 11,300 which is possibly therefore original from new. The Daytona has been repainted in red from the original blue and is described as being clean and straight with good shut lines. Extras include front fog lamps behind the grille, air conditioning, Borrani wire wheels (the spare was missing when inspected) and Blaupunkt radio/cassette. It has a jack and hammer in a Ferrari tool bag and other ancillary tools. The Ferrari was shown at the 1992 Burn Foundation Concours, PA.
