Description Between 1975 and 1985 the 1600cc single seater class in British Hill climbing was particularly competitive; top line competitors, such as Mario Andretti used the opportunity as a stepping stone to the more competitive and more powerful single seater class. Most entrants used Formula 2 and Formula 3 race prepared cars of the era with a Ford derived BDA or FVC engine mated to a Hewland gearbox. Some were successful, but perhaps none more so than the March 722. March Engineering, British manufacturer and motor car constructor began operation in 1969 by its four founders, Robin Herd, Max Mosley, Graham Coaker and Alan Rees. The name ‘March’ was made by using initials from each founder’s first or last names. Each of these individuals had different roles in the team, Herd the designer of both the chassis and body, Rees was the team’s manager, Coaker oversaw production, and Mosley handled the commercial side of the operation. Teamed together the company was able to reach huge success in a wide range of classes throughout the 1970’s owed greatly to the experience the four men had in their respective roles. The main purpose for the company was to provide chassis’ for customers racing in all categories, they produced a Formula Three car in 1969 and in 1970 they produced the 701, prepared for Formula One which was offered to clients. The 1970 Formula one season saw Jackie Stewart win the Spanish Grand Prix at Jarama beating Bruce McLaren to the flag, ultimately giving March there first ever Formula one win, with a strong third placing for March works driver Mario Andretti backing up their race weekend success. In later years March became one of the most successful teams in a wide range of classes. Their cars were campaigned in Formula 2, Formula 3, Ford 1600 and CanAm. Chris Amon, Niki Lauda, and Ronnie Peterson were just a few notable drivers to have raced with March Engineering. In 1972 March introduced the 722 for the Formula Atlantic Series for the European market, and 72B for the Formula B series in the United States.
