Introduced in 1966, the Silver Shadow was an important departure for Rolls-Royce. Its many new features ushered Rolls-Royce motor cars into a new era, carrying forward primarily the marque’s magnificent 6,230cc overhead valve V-8 engine and its unparalleled reputation for quality, silence and luxury. The single most significant attribute of the evolution was the decision to build the new Silver Shadow on a unit body platform. Eliminating the separate frame meant, to all practical purposes, that bespoke coachbuilders like James Young and Mulliner-Park Ward became custom outfitters. The few limited production bodies they built were lengthened for formal use or convertible and coupe conversions. On the other hand unit body construction was lighter and more rigid for greatly improved handling. The new chassis incorporated fully independent suspension with self-leveling load compensation. Disc brakes all around assured safe, reliable stopping power despite weighing well over two and one-half tons with occupants and luggage. The strong, reliable GM Turbo 400 automatic transmission employed calibrations to suit Rolls-Royce owners’ expectations and the lazy power but abundant torque of the Rolls-Royce V-8, which was increased in size to 6,750cc in 1970. Over its eleven year production life from 1966 through 1976 just over 20,605 Silver Shadow I standard steel saloons were built and they have proven their quality in succeeding years. Reggie Jackson purchased this very late example, a 1976 model built in October 1975, because he needed an automobile that would be comfortable for his mother to ride in. Most of its life has been spent in Reggie’s home garage where it has been available for occasional use and enjoyment, seeing only 15,168 miles from new. It is fitted with mouton over rugs and a Blaupunkt AM-FM, which is augmented by an indash Pioneer 8-track stereo tape player. Nestled in the slots between the front seats are two 8-track cartridges: Chuck Mangione and Luciano Pavarotti. “My mother listened to the Pavarotti and enjoyed the fact that I’d met him a couple times in New York,” Reggie recalled. Except for one quality repaint in its original black it is all original and in superbly maintained condition throughout. The interior wood, particularly the inlaid door capping and moldings, is nearly flawless despite being over thirty years old. The paint, chrome and tan leather upholstery also are all nearly flawless. The trunk is spotless and looks like it has never had any luggage in it. Consistently maintained ready to be used on a moment’s notice, during cataloging it started instantly and idled nearly imperceptibly, as any well-maintained 15,000 miles Rolls-Royce should. A one-owner car from the collection of a consummate car guy with the resources and knowledge to see it always maintained properly, it is a rare opportunity to acquire a virtual time capsule. Without reserve
