The Lancia Beta range consisted of a four- door saloon, three-door sports estate (HPE), the mid-engine Monte Carlo Coupé and the 2+2 Spider, the latter styled by Pininfarina but built by Zagato. Only 9,390 Spiders were built before production ended in 1984 and at this time just 14 of the righthand drive, two litre models were registered in the UK at the beginning of this year. The chassis, suspension and interior were very definitely the work of the Lancia engineers and possess all the qualities one would expect from this revered marque. The independent rear suspension was particularly ingenious and widely copied by other manufacturers as FIAT neglected to patent the design. To call these Beta Spiders rare is an understatement yet spare parts are easy to come by and they are huge fun to drive with superb handling and a decent turn of speed. First registered in June 1980, this two litre spider has had just three owners from new, the last purchased it in 2006. The original handbook and service book show it was first supplied by Lambs (Continental) Ltd from their Hornchurch dealership to a Mr. Platford from Great Warley, Essex. The service book has four service stamps up to June 1986 by which time the car had done 31,320 miles, the current mileage is just over 47,000 miles which the vendor believes to be genuine however there is insufficient evidence to warrant the mileage. About six years ago the car was professionally restored including a full re-spray in silver and the fitment of new headlights, a new hood, new clutch, new cam belt and four new tyres. Dry stored for the last four years, it was re-commissioned earlier this year getting a new MoT test certificate which expires in May 2015. The black interior appears to be original and is in good condition for its age and still has a period Radiomobile stereo fitted. All the original Lancia tools are in the boot including the correct long plug socket. This cherished three-owner example is supplied with a V5C registration document, MoT certificate and workshop manual. The Lancia Beta Spider could well prove a shrewd investment as this model becomes rarer and rarer.
