The Toyota Land Cruiser, in its many sizes and configurations has had a long and successful history of reliable service through the most rugged of conditions. Patterned after the ubiquitous Jeep and Land Rover utility vehicles, the Land Cruiser demonstrated that Toyota could produce much more than just economical cars. Introduced in 1960, it was available as the FJ40 series (with F engines) but also BJ40/41/42 (short wheelbase), BJ43/44/46 (middle wheelbase) or HJ45/47 (long wheelbase) and it is the long wheelbase version offered here today. In line with this, a number of chassis options were also available with half cabs, soft tops and doors and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. They became indispensable in unsettled and remote areas of the world, hauled safaris through Africa, developed a devoted following among America's off-road culture and have spawned a host of imitators. Today finding a good vintage example of these archetypical utility vehicles can be difficult, although, a restored FJ43 recently sold in the US for $75,000. Originating from Victoria in Southern Australia, this great looking example was then fully restored in North Yorkshire in 2012. The works undertaken now offer an example of the HJ47 in completely standard specification. It carries a pick-up style rear section- with folding sides all round- and facilities for towing if required. Five new BF Goodrich All Terrain tyres are fitted and motive power comes from a rebuilt, 4.0-Litre, six-cylinder diesel engine. A strong alternative to the Defender- it is reported that just three examples still survive in this country. Rare and cool.
