Development started on the Lotus Turbo Esprit in late 1977 and featured the new 2174cc, 910 engine (based on a redesigned 907 engine) with a dry sump (initially) and a Garrett AiResearch Turbocharger, producing 210bhp. There were larger brakes, revised rear suspension and additions to the bodywork, including front spoiler and rear integrated spoiler and sills. The car was released in February 1980 at a party in the Royal Albert Hall and sported Essex Turbo livery. In 1981 the car was sold as the Turbo Esprit and sold very well indeed. The Giorgetto Giugiaro designed car was one of the fastest accelerating cars in its day with this one owned, from new, by the vendor and presents in strong Calypso Red with half-gold leather upholstery and air-conditioning. The majority of servicing and repairs have been carried out by Lotus Cars Ltd at Hethel with the exception of the odd oil/filter changes. After a number of related issues over a number of years concerning water in the oil, the engine and clutch were finally replaced free of charge by Lotus in 1991. To complement the new engine, an exchange gearbox was fitted 1,250 miles ago costing £1,800 plus fitting and the following year, it benefitted from a complete repaint by ICI In June 1994, after Bugatti purchased Lotus, a couple of power units were found and offered for sale. Each unit comprised full engine, carburettors, distributer, turbo unit, starter motor & alternator. These were possibly the last two available worldwide and the chance was too good to miss. They were purchased and fitted breathing new life into this already well presented Esprit Turbo. Good quality examples are coveted and, having just returned from a full service including timing belts and MoT test, this classic Lotus is the model to collect. Interested parties should note that the current number plate is to be retained and a new, age-related plate will be issued instead.
