FISA’s introduction of Group B regulations for the World Rally Championship in 1982 revolutionised the series. Only 200 road cars were required for homologation and an almost limitless number of modifications permitted, a formula that led to the development of some of the most exciting and spectacular rally cars the world had ever seen. Based on the new 205 hatchback, Peugeot’s first Group B contender was the 205 Turbo 16, although apart from a few body panels few parts were interchangeable. Like Lancia’s rival Delta S4, the 205 Turbo 16 carried its turbo-charged 1.8-litre engine where the rear seat passengers would have been and employed up-rated running gear and permanent four-wheel drive. Ari Vatanen recorded the Turbo 16’s maiden win at the 1,000 Lakes in 1984, the first of a record-breaking five consecutive World Championship victories. Team-mate Timo Salonen became World Champion at the end of 1985, securing Peugeot the Makes Championship into the bargain, and the 205 Turbo 16 proved just as successful the following year - Group B’s last - when Juha Kankkunen secured the Driver’s Championship and Peugeot’s second consecutive Makes title. We are advised that this road-going 205 Turbo 16 was ordered originally by a Yorkshire Peugeot dealer for his own personal use and purchased directly from him by the present owner in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Never raced or rallied, it has covered just 8,409 kilometres from new (circa 2,000 in this ownership) and is presented in commensurately excellent condition throughout. The car is finished in silver metallic with two-tone grey, partial leather interior. Kept in dry storage, it was last serviced by a Peugeot agent around two years ago and will require gentle re-commissioning before use. The vehicle comes with a quantity of original factory literature including parts catalogue, illustrated colour workshop manual and competition parts catalogue, as well as a quantity of spares. Described as “a car of real character and a delight to drive,” it represents an opportunity to acquire a rare Group B homologation-special supercar that can only become increasingly collectible.
