1985 FERRARI 288GTO Registration No. B150 NPK Chassis No. 55717 Engine No. 167 Rosso Corsa with Nero interior. Engine: V8 90 degree twin overhead camshafts, 2855cc, twin turbos and intercoolers, 400bhp @ 7000rpm, dry sump; Gearbox: five-speed transaxle; Suspension: independant front & rear with transverse wishbones; Brakes: ventilated discs all round. Left hand drive. Unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in the Spring of 1984, the all-new Ferrari 288GTO was an immediate success and reintroduced the GTO designation that quickened the pulse of all true Ferraristi; here was a road car that at first glance seemed a familiar 308GTB but which in fact was a completely different animal - a strong tubular steel chassis housed the in-line V8 engine that was equipped with twin IHI turbochargers and twin intercoolers, Weber-Marelli electronic injection and ignition feeding both sides of the engine and a displacement of 2855cc. Mated to the Ferrari designed and built magnesium cased gearbox, the new car was capable of a top speed quoted at 189.5mph with a 0-62.1mph in a staggering 4.9 seconds...... The bodywork for the new car was designed primarily by Harvey Postlethwaite, then Ferrari F1 team engineer, who utilised many of the construction techniques found on the race cars such as high tensile Kevlar fibre and thin laminates. This combination allowed for both an increase in rigidity and also a major reduction in weight. The shape was of course typical Pininfarina, derived from the 308 but using glassfibre (steel doors) for the body. Perhaps not suprisingly, the originally proposed total of 200 cars was quickly over-run and, to special customer demand, an eventual total of just 278 examples were made, far fewer than the F40 model which topped out at some 1300 cars. Today the 288GTO is rightly regarded as one of the definitive sportcars of its age and they are highly prized amongst collectors. All are left hand drive and all are red with black interior. This example was ordered new through Maranello Concessionaires Ltd by John Foulston, founder of Atlantic Computers and late owner of Brands Hatch circuit, who was synonymous with high performance road and track cars. Correspondance on file includes the original Ferrari pro-forma invoice and notes relating to the personal import papers, the car privately driven from Italy to the UK arriving on May 16 1985. Mr Foulston had requested both the optional air conditioning and electric windows to be fitted. Mrs Foulston assumed ownership in early 1990 and the present private owner aquired the Ferrari in June 1996 when the recorded mileage was stated at 6,705 klms. The mileage now stands at 17,662 klms. Receipts and documentation for the car include the Service Warranty booklet stamped up to July this year when the cam belts were renewed, many receipts for work attested to over the past years, GTO handbook, rare Press information wallet for the 288 and current registration document. The car also has a Tracker alarm system fitted. Judging by the ownership history and paperwork with the car, this GTO appears to have been extremely well looked after and will no doubt be very rewarding to own and drive.
