1986 FERRARI 412 SPORTS COUPÉ Registration No. C511 KVS Chassis No. ZFFYD 24C 0000 63907 Engine No. 00145 Black with tan interior Engine: V12, 4,943cc 340bhp at 6000 rpm; Gearbox: Three speed automatic; Suspension: independent front and rear by transverse wishbones with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic disc with ABS. Right hand drive. Autocar October 4, 1975, comparison of luxury cars including the predecessor to the 412. This test reached the following conclusion: Our own vehicles can all compete on one level or another. But none of them can compete with the Ferrari on all levels. The 412 was the definitive version of the 2+2 coupé series that Ferrari had originally introduced in 1972. From the outset, the intention had been to challenge the finest luxury saloons that were available, and it was anticipated that large demand would come from the lucrative American market, though sadly the costs involved in meeting the stringent US regulations denied it this option. Through progressive updates the model gained automatic transmission, fuel injection, and with it improved performance and road handling. By 1985, Ferrari had completely revised the interior of the car, and equipped it with the most modern luxury fittings from electrically controlled seats to touch sensitive switches, and an enlarged boot now allowed more luggage space. However, intrinsically the character of the model remained, the subtle Pininfarina coachwork clothing the renowned 5 litre V12 powerplant. An outstanding luxury car, the 412 offered the pinnacle of safety, performance and comfort and which led the way for the current GT four seater Ferraris. This Ferrari was bought new by P. Langford Morgan on 22nd May 1986 and purchased in 1992 by Elton John. Originally supplied in metallic brown, Elton had the car resprayed to the present preferable black paintwork, and toned down the interior replacing the dash facia, to make the excellent combination it is today. Offered for sale with the original Ferrari service folder, this confirms maintenance by HR Owen, Graypaul, Maranello and latterly Weybridge Automobiles, and supports the indicated mileage of just over 30,000, with just 350 being added since 1997 and the most recent service in November 2000. A well presented example, it is offered with a current MoT certificate to November this year and current road fund licence. The 412 is a perfect balance car in the collection, being between the true sports cars such as the XJ 220 Jaguar and the more sedate high speed saloons like the Bentleys, yet still a product of the most renowned sports car manufacturer in the world. Of the 412 Elton John commented: 'It's a beautiful car.. I love the look of that model. It's a classic Ferrari shape'. Sir Elton John's fleet manager, John Newman was somewhat less enthusiastic however, remembering that when he first saw it he had confused it for a Datsun: 'I thought it was the car sent to pick up the driver of the Ferrari.. it was a horrible bronzey brown colour that you associate with a Datsun' . Newman still jokingly refers to this car as 'Datsun', his opinion of it however has gone up immeasurably since it was resprayed black, and he says that it's a lovely car to drive. Derek Baulcombe, Sir Elton's main driver, marvels at the way this car handles. He recalled the first time he took it out, he couldn't believe the speed of the acceleration or the power of the brakes, he commented that it's 'beautiful' to drive, very fast but very safe. He said that Elton John mainly uses it for going on short runs to Watford for the football or to tennis at the David Lloyd centre.
