1986 LANCIA DELTA S4 ROADCAR Registration No. TBA Chassis No. ZLA038ARO00000032 Metallic red with beige alcantara interior Engine: 4 cylinder, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder, Volumex supercharger and KKK turbocharger, 1,759cc, 250 bhp at 6,700 rpm; Gearbox: 5 speed ZF; Suspension: independent front and rear with double wishbones, telescopic dampers and coil springs to the front with double wishbones, twin telescopic dampers and coil springs to the rear; Brakes: ventilated discs front and rear. Left hand drive. Lancia's history in world rallying has a long and enviable record of success. Whether it be the Fulvia, the Ferrari-engined Stratos, the fearsome 037 or the Delta Integrale for nearly three decades one could expect to see a representative of the Torino marque fighting for top honours in world class rallies. In the formative years of Group B rallying, the Lancia's 037 proved to be a highly competitive tool but when Audi unleashed its four wheel drive Quattro, the world of rallying was set for an explosive era that remains to be bettered in terms of raw speed and rapid development. In a comparatively short period of time Audi, Ford, MG, Peugeot and of course Lancia built 'rally specials' that for the first time in rally history bore little or no resemblance to models in their production range. Designed to supercede the 037 whilst adopting the four wheel drive format of the Quattro, the Lancia Delta S4 program began in 1983 with the first prototype ready by mid 1984. Built around a tubular spaceframe it featured three differentials and a freshly designed 1,759cc engine by Abarth. The adoption of four valves per cylinder, twin overhead camshafts and an alloy block and head were no surprise but where the competitors relied on either large displacement or turbochargers; Abarth opted for a supercharger in addition to a turbocharger - the result was phenomenal. The Delta S4 was homologated by the FIA in early November 1985 and on its World Championship debut at the Lombard RAC later that month it filled the top two spots on the podium courtesy of Henri Toivonen and Markku Alen. For the 1986 season Lancia looked set to challenge the Peugeots and Audis for the Championship and the driver line up led again by Toivonen and Alen provided a formidable mix. Sadly 1986 was to be the last year of Group B rallying due to a number of high profile accidents including the sad and untimely death of Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto on the Tour de Course. In order to compete in Group B rallying, each manufacturer had to build a minimum of two hundred cars in total thus detuned, road going derivatives were produced to make up the numbers. In the case of the Lancia Delta S4, it remains to be the rarest of all Group B rallycars. Whether the required number of Lancia Delta S4s were actually produced, or produced then destroyed or dismantled for spares, nobody is quite certain but despite the best efforts of informed enthusiasts, less than eighty appear to be accountable today. The car we offer here, is an exceptionally original and only lightly used example displaying less than 10,500kms on the odometer, a figure that would be hard to disagree with upon viewing. For the past 10 years the car has remained in dry storage with no use whatsoever but recently it has been treated to a thorough checkover which included draining and changing of all fluids, belts and spark plugs and the car now runs extremely well. The interior in particular is in remarkable condition and the alcantara upholstery looks and smells like new. A period 'state-of-the-art' Blaupunkt stereo with graphic equalizer adorns the fascia and Kenwood speakers are mounted in the doors but otherwise the car appears as it was when it rolled of the production line. Both the engine bay and front section of the car show a build up of road dust and surface oxidation commensurate with use and please note that the space-saver spare wheel is not present. The bodywork is in very go
