Mercedes-Benz used the 'SL' variant name on 'Sport Liecht' roadsters manufactured since 1954 and was first applied to the 300SL 'Gullwing' so named after the upward-opening doors. The Mercedes-Benz R107 and C107 editions were produced from 1971 through to 1989 and were the second longest single series ever produced by the company after the G-Class. The R107 took the chassis components of the mid-size W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class (W116). The SL variant was a two seat convertible/roadster with standard soft-top, hard-top and optional seats for the rear bench. Registered in November 1986, this example, finished in 'Diamond Blue' with grey checker centre pattern seats is the very scarce 420SL variant. It benefits from drivers airbag safety equipment and is fitted with a CD multichanger. It also has the optional rear seats and colour coded hardtop. The fabric roof was renewed just three years ago and the car has benefited from diligent maintenance and upkeep throughout its life. There is a large history file to accompany the car which contains 18 old MoT test certificates along the original and stamped service book within the owner's handbook wallet. There are also two sets of keys, a long MoT test certificate and a current tax disc. The colour combination is elegant and the car has been kept in fine order throughout. The V8 engine starts on the first turn of the key and settles quickly into a steady idle. The driving experience is sumptuous and the car feels every bit the definition of quality motoring by which so many other manufacturers referenced themselves for many years. A rare a desirable specification SL presented in excellent order throughout.
