1986 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL Koenig Special (Widebody) Lot Number191 RegistrationL101AVL Chassis NumberWDB1070461A56648 Engine Number11796412002437 Odometer reading30,254 km Estimate£49,000 - £55,000 Print details Send this to a friend 4 more images A very rare 500 SL Koenig Special Widebody Believed to be only 30,000km from new Totally original Koenig Specials specialised in modifying the flagship models of the top European brands such as Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari, BMW and Jaguar. However, as you would imagine, the prices after conversion were anything but cheap; In 1986, a brand-new BMW M3 (E30) would cost 50,000DM (Deutsche Marks), meanwhile the Mercedes Koenig Specials model would start from 600,000DM to Ferrari, 1.000,000DM. But what you got for your money was in fact, a race car for open roads. For the founder Willy Koenig it was usual to increase Koenig Specials power by adding turbos or upgrading the engine with racing components. While Koenig Specials were barely known outside the petrolhead enthusiasts, there were a few notable personalities who owned them during their hay day. Mike Tyson famously owned a Koenig Specials widebody Ferrari Testarossa that developed 1000hp and Sylvester Stallone who had a Koenig Specials Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC. This 1986 Mercedes-Benz SL500 (R107) Koenig Special was imported to the UK from Spain in 2020, purchased from a Lamborghini dealer. It has a full Remus competition exhaust system but the final exhaust box was taken out because under the TUV Spanish regulations, flames are not allowed. The car has the full Koenig Special aesthetic conversion including their signature double rear wing, Testarossa-style side slats and full leather Recaro sports seats, original Victor wooden steering wheel and more. It is believed to be totally original with just 30,000kms on the odometer. Finished in grey with black interior, it comes complete with a green/gold hardtop that matches perfectly with the wide BBS competition wheels that are shod with gigantic 345/35/15 section Pirelli P Zero Isometric tyres. This 500 SL is supplied with a UK V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in March 2022 and a metal Certificate of Authenticity from Koenig Specials. While it is not certain how many R107 SL500 Koenig Specials were built, there is certainty that there won’t be many, especially in this well-preserved condition with original stickers and paint. Interested parties should note that this car was manufactured in 1986 not 1978 as stated in the catalogue.
