Ram Automotive cars, although similar in appearance to the other Cobra replicas, are totally different under the double-skinned fibreglass shell. Instead of a ladder frame chassis, there is a full space frame which was developed in conjunction with the race car constructors, Reynard. Adrian Cocking is the man behind Ram Automotive, an ex-Dax employee who left to set up his own business. The very nature of the Ram's chassis construction gives increased rigidity over most ladder frames and offers benefits in the car's handling. Jaguar top and bottom wishbones are hung onto the front of the chassis and used in conjunction with up-rated road springs and dampers. At the rear of the car, a modified Jaguar XJ series rear axle is used with narrowed drive-shafts. The space frame design offers the safety conscious a well braced body shell; there are many impact absorbing zones and the driver is surrounded by substantial framework. Also the fuel tank is set deep into the chassis behind the seats for protection. Most Ram Cobra replicas were fitted with a mildly tweaked Rover V8 engine; in some cases a large American V8 unit was used giving similar performance to the original Shelby Cobra. Finished in metallic Porsche Zinc, this example was built in 1992 and designed by Adrian Reynard who was heavily involved in Formula One, Champ Car and Cart racing chassis. This Ram replica is powered by a Chevrolet ZZ3 power plant producing 345bhp and 409lb/ft via a Holley 650CFM carburettor and Mallory electronic ignition. Purchased by our current vendor in 2009, he had the vehicle shipped to his residence in France but problems with the French DVLA equivalent meant that this RAM replica has done very few miles over the past seven years. Transmission is provided by a four speed Muncie gearbox which is housed in a modified Reynard space frame chassis that was up-rated in eleven extra places for rigidity. The car also boasts a stainless steel exhaust which provides ample audio to the fantastic and iconic look of this car. Although up-rated, meticulous attention has been taken to produce an authentic feel with the use of many correct parts. The dash board was traced from an original 427 Cobra at Beaulieu National Motor Museum and is complimented by the three spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel and black Connolly hide on both seats and door panels. The wheels are the correct replica Halibrand wheels and three blade spinners. Accompanying the car is the build book including receipts and history alongside detailed diagrams. Registered as a 1967 historic vehicle, fully road legal and tax exempt, this fantastic example represents one of the most authentic Cobra replicas we have seen.
