19th C. Japanese painting on textile with a floral
watercolor and pastel on paper titled "River Landscape". Alexander John Drysdale was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1870 and moved with his family to New Orleans in 1883. From 1901 to 1903, he lived in New York and studied painting with Robert Henri George Inness and William Merritt Chase He then returned to New Orleans and painted primarily landscapes, although he is listed in the Directory as a portrait painter. He developed a style of depicting calm, hazy atmospheric scenes of marshes, bayous, and moss-laden trees. By 1916, he had developed his own form of watercolor using cotton balls and brushes with diluted oil paint in kerosene. By the 1920's, he was one of the most sought after painters in the city and produced about 10,000 works. Site: 18.875"H x 28.5"W; Frame: 29"H x 37.75"W. Circa - 1st Half 20th C.
