19th Century, nine with 'J Whatman' watermark dated '1840'
Forty-four sheets, mostly on paper, some on card and primarily gouache but with some in ink and watercolor, all bound within an album with an embossed and gilded velvet binding and an engraving glued on the first page entitled 'Winifred Bois', dated 1930 and depicting four images of similar type to the album images, below a pencilled inscription reading 'Youqua, circa 1780-1840, comprising:
Thirty-four (34) Chinese Views:
Seven (7) figural groups including three elegantly robed single male and female figures; an archer and servant; two women painting; a scholar reading; and two ladies playing musical instruments: with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark.
Five (5) flower and fruit groups including blossoms with pomegranates: with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark; corn; beet and peppers; peaches and lotus; and a composite group: with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark.
Two (2) flower and butterfly groups including chrysanthemum; and morning glory: with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark.
Nine (9) flower and bird groups including a bird-of-paradise; doves: with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark; three of pheasants: one with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark; a mandarin duck, red-breasted birds; and a long-tailed bird.
Five (5) river views, three with boats: one with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark.
Six (6) various subjects including a throne with chair cover: with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark; four with vases and vessels on stands: one with 'J Whatman, 1840' watermark; and a river scene with a pagoda centered on a sheet with four vignettes at the corners of birds and boats.
